I'm looking at x86-64 hardware, and Im really considering to make the jump to AMD Opteron, but I still know much too little about it. Is there anybody out there who can fill me in on some facts that seem to be impossible to get straight answers on? What I am mostly curious about is what the real gain is? After all, the Opteron is available in speeds up to 1.8GHz, and the Athlon MP can be bought in speeds up to 2.8GHz. A dual CPU Athlon MP 2.8GHz is still much cheaper than the single CPU Opteron 1.8GHz configuration.. So, where is the real gain in moving on to Opteron? I cant really see the Performance <-> Price factors quite reaching to the point where Im prepared to make the leap onto Opteron. But, it doesnt matter who I ask, no one can give me straight info, everybody throws a lot of MIPS and MFLOPS on to me, but thats not interesting, the interesting thing is performance in a REAL LIFE situation. So, can you please give me some light here?
