anyone have any recommendations on linux based firewalls? I found smoothwall...seems like a really cool idea.
I've been using Smoothwall for a couple of years now It works pretty good. I have it installed on an old P-75 I had collecting dust in a cupboard. Scrounged up 32MB of RAM for it, and had an old 500MB hard drive laying around. It's been running 24x7 ever since. What I like about it is that you download the iso, burn it to CDROM and then boot it on your donor machine. It is really easy to configure - especially for someone who isn't interested in learning all the nitty gritty details of firewall setup. Maintenance and configuring is done via a web browser once it's up and running. I look at my logs and see that it seems to be stopping all the port scans etc that I get all the time. I started up various firewalls on machines behind the Smoothwall firewall and not one made a peep or had anything in the logs - I guess that's a good indication that my Smoothwall is doing it's job. I've also tried some of the tests at GRC and it reports back as stealth mode. The only issues I can think of is that it doesn't support all USB broadband modems, but it's getting better. They also don't support the Huges Satellite modems - which is a shame because that's the one setup I really needed it for. C.
