Well, you can always check your /var/log/messages for any system messages, whether errors or normal system info. It seems that X is running ok or you couldn't get the other GUI's to work ok . There is also the alternative to reinstall all of KDE to maybe replace an errant file that got installed. You can also find a .xsession &
..xsession-errors files in your user directory. Don't think you will see anything there, but worth a look at least as the bug may be coming from that.
Dear Pat, You were right. Nothing in those files that gave a clue what is causing the hanging of KDE. I deleted KDE leaving only those programs which were necessary for other programs and reinstalled all of KDE. Same problem so that I am now so far as to do what every Windoows user does daily. I will tomorrow night reinstall my 8.2 complete unles you have still other ideas, leaving only my home directory untouched. Must be something very persistant which is causing me problems with KDE.
