Question: What is the best system for keeping SuSE current? I have been using YaST Online update for the past several days, but now I am having a few issues with Evolution (syncing with a Handspring Treo 180) I have been advised to download Red Carpet and make sure certain packages are up to date.
Would there be a conflict between these update programs? Also, does SuSE have and apt like program.
You can get apt and it's required packages from here.. ftp://ftp.gwdg.de:0/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.2-i386/RPMS.extra/ apt-0.5.5cnc6-rb3.i386.rpm apt-devel-0.5.5cnc6-rb3.i386.rpm apt-libs-0.5.5cnc6-rb3.i386.rpm apt-server-0.5.5cnc6-rb3.i386.rpm lua-5.0-rb3.i386.rpm lua-devel-5.0-rb3.i386.rpm perl-XML-Filter-BufferText-1.01-rb1.i586.rpm perl-XML-Handler-Dtd2Html-0.31-rb2.i586.rpm perl-XML-Handler-Dtd2Html-0.32-rb1.i586.rpm perl-XML-SAX-Expat-0.37-rb1.i586.rpm perl-XML-SAX-Writer-0.44-rb1.i586.rpm synaptic-0.40-rb1.i386.rpm (if you want a GUI for apt) I'm not sure about which perl modules it requires but their small and installing them won't hurt anything. Using apt you can get the usr-local-bin (ulb) upgrades such as Evolution. I wouldn't use RedCarpet if you paided me. The last time I used it..it wanted to uninstall a bunch of stuff that had absolutely nothing to do with Ximian or Evolution and had I let it move forward it would have destroyed several things on the system. Apt can be a bit cranky at times and if your not careful it can mess things up but if you read it's messages about what it's going to do or not do then you should be fine. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.
