I couldn't find a java or java2 symlink in my /usr/lib but I did find a java text doc in /etc/sysconfig which contained the following: ## Path: Applications/Java ## Description: ## Type: yesno ## Default: yes # # SuSEconfig can automatically create the links /usr/lib/java and /usr/lib/jre # that point to a suitable JDK or JRE respectively if you set CREATE_JAVALINK # to "yes" # If you are not satisfied with the choice it makes, set CREATE_JAVALINK to # "no" and set the link manually. # CREATE_JAVALINK="yes" I created the links usr/lib/java and usr/lib/jre with ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2 java and ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2 jre and ran SuSEconfig. This appears to have created the file /etc/java/j2re1.4.2.conf with the path directives from my symlinks. Java now works fine from the command line and in Konqueror.

on Tue, 01 Jul 2003 21:47:29 +0000 I installed j2re 1.4.2 on my SuSE 8.2 system from rpm without any problems. However I cannot run java commands from the console. i.e. if I type java it says bash: java: command not found If I enter: export PATH="/usr/java/j2re1.4.2/bin":$PATH then: export JAVA_HOME="/usr/java/j2re1.4.2"
Then java will start to work. I have to do this for every new console window. What is the correct way to make j2re available to all my console windows and applications?
In my 8.2 there are 2 symlinks in /usr/lib, java and java2. Both pointed to Blackdown on installation. I installed IBM 1.4.1, deleted the symlinks and redid them to point to /usr/lib/IBMJava2-141/. SuSE seems to find the "jre/bin" part without any other help.
