What I do not yet know is how to get the output to be useable.
Just to double check, did you choose the correct sound source in you mixer? If you go into alsamixer, the recording device should be marked with "captur" in red on top and also make sure it is not muted (not marked with "MM") and the volume set to a reasonable level.
