I get yelled at by someone on this mailing list everytime I say this but if you are using KDE go to the Control Center->Sound & Multimedia->Sound System->Start aRts soundserver on KDE startup and uncheck that box. If anyone can help me get this figured out, they will definitely have my appreciation!
