I always thought SCO stood for Santa Clara Operations (now I know better)
It once stood for Santa **Cruz** Operation (no 's'). It was originally a play on the way TRW (I believed) refered to Larry and Doug Michels when they were doing consulting for TRW. They were called "that Santa Cruz operation", and Larry and Doug then used it as the name of their new company.
