I don't have a ~/.Xmodemap. I guess I can try and create one, but that is something I have always wanted to avoid because it always breaks something that I'm unaware of. Then I spend days trying to hunt down the source of the problem when I discover it a month later. I just recreated my home directory and let the setup create everything for me. Perhaps I'll be able to get it working now that all the old clutter is out of the way.
Well you can name the file anything you want. Create the file anythingyouwant containing something like this: keycode 110 = Multi_key replacing 110 with the key code of the key you wish to use as the Compose key, which you can find with the xev command. Then issue the command xmodmap anythingyouwant and the Compose key should be working. If it does then have it executed automatically when starting X. (By putting it in ~/.xinitrc?) BTW, ~/.Xmodmap was present after installation. It's somewhat strange that you're missing it. SH
