My 8.1 system was setup with a 2x cdrom. Not fast but it worked. Since burning was not possible with this cdrom I recently bought a 52x24x52 cdrw which worked okay until it failed. No problem because it is still within the guarantee period. For the time that I have to wait for replacement I was given a 40x cdrom in order to be able to work with cd's Funny thing is that with this cdrom I am not able to read my 8.1 installation cd's. If the 40x is a "loaner" until your replacement arrives, it is probably used, and alot by previous users. Sounds like the laser lens is dirty. If you can't read the 8.1 cd's, there is something wrong with the drive, unless your 8.1 cd's are copies? -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
