I had this problem because I have a smp machine. I had to copy two files : cp /boot/vmlinuz.version.h /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h cp /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h /usr/src/linux/include/linux/autoconf.h
I also have dual-processor workstations, but I don't have /boot/vmlinuz.version.h or /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h. What I do is copy /boot/vmlinuz.config to /usr/src/linux/.config, then do a `make oldconfig', then do a `make dep'. I never knew what was important about this process, but I guess it's like John said: version.h and autoconf.h. This process will create them (or whatever it is that VMware is looking for).
