Is it possible to use 'xmms' to play sound off a CD which is in the CD-ROM drive on the same machine? If so, how?
Yes, that's possible. Actually in two different ways!
Or is 'xmms' limited to sound-files stored in the filesystem or accessed over the web (which is all I've managed to achieve so far)?
No, not at all.
OK, just answered my own question -- you have to start 'xmms' as root (or else change the permissions on the device which the CD drive is on, in my case /dev/hdc ... ).
If you log in via kdm, the permissions should be configured correctly for your user on login.
However, nest question: the xmms "equaliser" seems to have no effect. Hmmm??
Yes, that's correct. In the "normal" CD-Player mode, the CD-ROM drive does
send the analogue audio signal directly to the sound card (via a separate
cable). The sound card has a special input channel for this, xmms does not
process the sound at all. This is how most CD-Player apps work - they
simply send commands to the CD-ROM drive to play a certain track.
However, xmms offers an additional method to play Audio CDs, by using the
AudioCD Reader (libcdread.so). Apart from playing audio CDs "the normal
way", it also offers an option to actually "grab" the audio data via the
data channel (Configure "Read Digital CD Audio" in the Output options of
the plugin). This audio stream can then be processed by xmms, which
enables you to work with the equalizer, see the spectrum analysis and pipe
it through the other effect plugins, before the audio data is being sent
to the sound card via /dev/dsp (or aRts).
