Well we do not know the hardware details of the OP as he mentioned he converted from RH 5.0 to SuSE 8.1 could be an old 486 which I would say lacks necessary power for the goodies you ention in the kernel :-)
Very true -- it occurred to me after posting my first post that 5.0 is VERY old (Brief pause while I dig out my copy) ---- 1997-11-18, libc-5.3.12, and (most importantly) kernel-2.0.31 --> Alan Cox pointed out on linux-kernel once that the 2.0.* kernels are the best kernels for low memory machines. (I had a 60-Mhz pentium that started out with only 8 Meg back then as I recall -- and the salesman at Egghead Software was astounded when I wanted to buy another 16 Meg to put in it -- largest amount available at the time.)
