When I start an application based on gtk2 (gaim-0.62, etc.) under KDE the fonts are very ugly
Turns out Jerry gave me the answer a couple of days ago (unfortunatley I initially dismissed it since it really didn't sound like the same issue):
: How do I change the default font my gtk apps are using? I use KDE, but a : few of my apps (xchat, gaim, gftp) have awful fonts. I've tried setting : GDK_USE_XFT=0 in /etc/profile.d/gnome2.sh which helped, but I'm still : stuck with large fonts in the above apps. Actually, KDM's fonts are : pretty large as well (14-16 point in KDM, 12-14 point in other apps). : : Very strange. Out of the two machines I upgraded to 8.2 from 8.1, only : one has this issue.

Although personally, I found that simply commenting out "DisplaySize" worked just as well.

In my case I ended up measuring the viewable area of my monitor (and then converting from inches to mm - ugh) and correcting the DisplaySize option in my XF86Config file. Removing the option completely left me with fonts that were just too small.
