And if he's smart he'll keep away from xconfig from the start and use menuconfig instead. At least for me, xconfig has been broken far too often in the past.
I've heard people complain about it, but for all the times I've compiled the kernel I've never had a single problem with xconfig. Maybe I've been lucky?! Still, it's very ugly so it's no big loss. gconfig is much sweeter :)
