I'm running SuSE 8.2 on a Inspiron 1100 currently. I have the following setup: Bezel, Feet, Plastic, Liquid Crystal Display, 15.0, ABCS Hinge, Cover, Plastic, Liquid Crystal Display, V2, 1100 Assembly, Cable, Coaxial, 15.0, Extended Graphics Array, ABCS Assembly, BASE, Internal, Conexant, 1100 Liquid Crystal Display, Extended Graphics Array, Standard Panels Working Group, W/BMV, 15, Length, Long Cord, Power, 110V, 6F, Alternating Current, 3W\3P, United States Adapter, Alternating Current, External, 20V, 90W, 3W, Power Factor Correction Processor, 80531, 2.0G, 128K, 400FSB, CEL Keyboard, United States, 85, Single Pointing, ABCS Case, Carrying, Nylon, Notebook, Back Pack Battery, Malaysia Direct Ship, 14.8V, 12C, Lithium, SANYO KIT, DOC/DSK, INTERVIDEO, 4.0, With Dolby Headphone Technology Hard Drive, 30GB, IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics), 2.5" Form Factor, 9.5MM, HIT-EUCL Assembly, Carrier, Hard Drive, ABCS Connector, Header, 2X22, Female, 2, S, Gold, 35K, Third Height, Chip Set Floppy Drive, 1.44M, External, Small Form Factor, Universal Serial Bus, TEAC KIT, Software, WKS-STE2K3, Original Equipment Mfgr., England/English KIT, Software, Overpack, WXPPSP1, Compact Diskette w/Documentation, England/English Dual In-Line Memory Module, 256, 266, 32X64, 8K, 200, B2 SUBASSY, CDRW/DVD, Vertical Assembly, Hitachi LG Data Storage, ABCS The Intel 845i video card is supported with 4.3 and the experimental hardware 3D works fairly nicely. I get 600 - 700 fps with gears. The screen I have is UGA so it run 1024x768 @ 60 Hz max (this is how dell is able to sell them so cheaply, put a 15" medium res screen on it. The screen is clear and sharp though). The sound worked out of the box. USB floppy drive works ok. The integrated NIC (bcm4401) worked out of the box. I have not tried to burn a CD under Linux yet. I have not tried to play a DVD under Linux yet. I have not tried any PCMCIA devices yet. I have not tried to use the intergrated modem (it's a windom) yet. The function keys under KDE 3.1 doesn't work. The Battery indicator under KDE 3.1 doesn't work. I must pull up a command prompt to eject the CD, it seems to lock it by default, but I don't know if it is SuSE or the way the drive works. I suspect that non of the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (?) functions work currently. So I don't know if the machine will over heat or kick fans on, etc, while I'm running SuSE 8.2. I think I'll post my findings to www.linux-laptop.net soon, but I just installed it on the laptop this weekend and need to do more fact finding. Hope this helps some. Would I be right by getting a Dell Inspiron 1100 to install Linux on it? Is its video card supported under Linux as well as other components such as controllers and sound card?
