I have just upgraded to SuSE 8.2 and it was NOT as easy as I thought it would be. Firstly it complained that there were problems with a load of packages which depended on alsa, mutt etc. I decided not to upgrade them where I could. The install went okay, X started with the 'nv' driver. I checked the network settings, my ADSL connection wasn't working. Somehow my firewall only worked properly when I had the configuration box open, the second I closed it, all incoming/outgoing network traffic was stopped. Well I un-installed the firewall, solved that problem, i'm using the rather mediocre SuSE Firewall (in YaST2). That solved, I dediced to install the Nvidia drivers from the website, that went okay except it didn't give me change to set the resoultion, so I had to do this manually through Sax2. Sax2 is a nightmare. It froze my system say 3 times 'testing' the configuration or going back to the desktop after testing. I eventually choose not to test anything and surpisingly it worked. My SUSE 8.2 installation now works fine except for a few things like my imici client which always starts with segmentation faults. I don't know why. I have tried re-installing it, maybe i need to remove a config file somewhere. I do like linux, but I don't want to be messing around with this.I hope my 3D games will now work!! Anyway, i can see why people who are using windows don't want to make the effort to change. I am running KDE 3.1.1 which is actually more up to date than the SUSE 8.2 KDE, and I am pleased it didn't overwrite it. What is mutt anyway, is it vital to the system? I haven't found any more problems so far, so that means that basically I'm not going to change back. I have tried using a windows machine, and I just cannot stand it. Nothing works the way I want it to, it is slow and it crashes far too much (linux hardly ever crashes on day to day use). I am now hoping my USB drive will work fine. If it does and I don't have to re-compile, I will be very pleased. George
