The only thing I'll add to this is, as I understand it, the AMD Opteron (which is announced officially *today* BTW) and the Athlon64 run 32bit code and OS *natively*, whereas the Itanium has to emulate in the 32bit mode -- which makes it MUCH slower running 32bit code!
