Hi - Has anyone just done an upgrade as opposed to a clean install? I've got 8.1, and except for a few kinks, it's working exactly the way I want it. I've always done clean installs before, but this time I'd really rather not. Especially in light of people who are having trouble with Evolution spell checker and OpenOffice, both of which I use. Of course, I'll back up everything first so if the upgrade doesn't work right I can always clean install later.
I did an upgrade on a production box at work and my own PC at home, both from 8.0. The office machine was pretty clean wrt alien software, the upgrade went smooth and without a hitch. At home my PC was/is really battered with lots of alien software, self-cooked RPM's, altered configs etc. I had to make about a dozen decisions wrt dependencies while upgrading, but all in all I'm pretty happy with the result. I still got a working and stable system, although not all the problems I had with the old 8.0 were solved, and I'm looking into some new problems. E.g., the upgrade installed both Apache 1.x and 2.x, but not the SuSE index.html in the doc-root, so I can't easily access the SuSE-help and/or SDB on localhost.
Thanks, Theo. I think the answer is for me to back up the stuff I want and just go ahead and try the upgrade. I can always clean install if the result is too ugly. Sadly, my copy of the upgrade didn't come yesterday so I'm forced to spend Easter Sunday doing yard work instead of playing with my favorite operating system! ;-) SuSE is just about the only important software I'm *always* happy to pay for - must keep those SuSE people eating so they can make more great stuff!
