Yes, I beleive so.
There is a PAM LDAP module that will authenticate against an LDAP server. Set up your 7.2 box to authenticate against 8.1 the LDAP server. It should work. No details here however. Maybe someone else can be more detailed on the PAM module configuration.
Thanks for saying it is possible, but has anyone got it working..
I am struggling hard, does the IMAP server have to haev support for LDAP authentication ? as when I telnet to the IMAP server I see AUTH=login ???
