I have a similar situation. I do web programming. All of my data, other than my emails and some local personal files, are stored on
I drag my files into my editor from my ftp client and
back to the server. I don't store anything locally because I don't have UPS and I often mess around with my systems to the point that I have to reinstall. It's much easier if I don't have important data on my machine that I may loose. My hardware on the other hand is expensive and if my

I would want the computer to be shut down immediately. Any data that I lose is going to be easy to replace. Having to buy new

Thanks for your reply, Gary. You think like me. With all the care and respect in the world, I feel compelled to voice an observation. I am alarmed to soo how many people replied without reading my original post properly. I made my questions and reasons very clear: 1. I'm looking for a sollution for when I'm NOT at the PC, and that would cut power immediately. 2. I'm not a full IT professional, I don't earn that kind of money. Upgrading to an AthlonXP on a kt133a based board (old for now) required a year of saving. Computer hardware might be rediculously cheap in the US and some other "first world" countries. The rest of the world pay through their noses. 3. I'm afraid one of those pathetic little hooks on the zif-socket might break under the enormous force of that industrial strength sping loaded clip that keeps the heatsink onto the CPU (It took me half an hour to get the damn thing hooked over, and by that time I was terrified that I had flexed the board and broke it. 4. Data's not as important as the hardware. I use my computer every day as a tool, but most of what I need it for comes out in one form or another - cd, paper, e-mail - and doesn't have to be stored on my computer. What is left are usually invoces for clients, incase they throw them away or drool on them and need me to reprint it, and even that can be recreated quickly (or photocopied from my copy). What's valuable is not what I keep on my computer, but what I do with my computer. I believe this was all very clear in my original post. A lot of time (both reading and writing) and PC-rage (giving and receiving :-) would be saved if we all read the posts properly.
