Thanks for all your help - i have come to the same conclusion i have reintalled postfix to start with a default settings.
In one of your messages you said you had your setup to go fetchmail -> procmail.
With this did you bypass postfix in someway ?
No, I just left out the part where feetchmail hands any mail off to sendmail. That's the way fetchmail works and you don't need to do anything to get it to do that. Then sendmail calls procmail as the 'local delivery agent' to actually decide where to deliver the mail. And it doesn't matter whether you're running postfix or sendmail, sendmail will be called (and postfix includes a 'sendmail' piece for that and other purposes).
