After devoting almost two months attempting to integrate the Palm ZIRE with the Kpilot, success has been achieved. The following information is being presented here for the SOLE purpose of attempting to provide useful information to others. Your milage may vary. My system is a SuSE8.1 Pro, Pentium IV 1.8 ghz processor and 512 Mb ram with an 80 Gb disk. The problems I was having which were consistent and reproducible were: 1) Frequent system "freezes" requiring a total cold reboot 2) Inability to even locate the Palm ZIRE until the 2.4.19 SuSE kernel was patched for the USB to detect and link the ZIRE 3) Inability to successfully download and compile any of the Kpilot versions on my system due to missing library and header functions even though I thought I had them all. Thanks to Adriaan, that was explained to me. As Adriaan is aware, I am a Physicist and not an accomplished programmer. 4) After solving #1 and #2, and downloading the latest version of a SuSE Kpilot version 4.3.6(3_1_BRANCH) RPM, most everything worked most of the time but not reliable enough for prime time. Random crashes and freezes remained a problem sometimes requiring a Master reset of the Palm ZIRE to restore operation. Now what works and so far is 100% reliable after running round the clock for in excess of 48 hours when driven by an automated script repeatedly exercising test scenerios known to previously break the system, is the following: 1) Removed the SuSE 2.4.19-73 stock kernel which was provided with SuSE 8.1 Pro version 2) Replaced with a SuSE mantel 2.4.20-14 rpm, build date 2/21/2003, as well as the 2.4.20-11 source rpm, build date 2/21/2003 3) The kernel works well AFTER adding ACPI=off AND disableapic to the grub file at boot time. Without these two changes the mouse, sound, and internet functions are inoperative. Research on the SuSE support web site indicates these two functions usually need to be set as I have shown here, on computers which have ide hardware such as mine. The surviving kernel boot parameters are: root=/dev/hda7 apm=on acpi=off vga=791 nosmp maxcpus=0 disableapic This kernel is substantially faster than the 2.4.18 version and has greatly improved USB support as Kpilot now functions perfectly and so far seems impossible to cause a crash. Further, the LCD display seems to have also been fixed ;ie, no more lockups. Thanks for the support and many suggestions and ideas I gleaned from this list, but especially thanks to the Kde Kpilot team and Adriaan de Groot for having the patience to work with me in solving this installation problem. Kpilot is a very useful companion for Palm type devices. Harry Wert
