When connecting to my ISP using Kinternet/smpppd and the internal HSF modem in my Vaio, the initial connection is made within, say, 15 seconds ('serial connection established' in the log). But after that it takes more than a minute before I can actually go out onto the net (i.e. the moment when the two Kinternet connectors icons in the applet tray close).
It was the firewall somehow, and updating the firewall made the problem go away.
Not to jump in on this thread, but I had the same problem and updating the firewall fixed it. However, since i use apt i had a firewall that was non upgradeable to the latest(3.1-50, I was running 43 then 47, i think it came from a suser, not the base package), so I had to go back to 3.1-22 to get the upgrade to work. Maybe someone else will have this problem so i thought I'd mention it. I just hope the problem of an accepted packet then an immediate denial of the same packet doesn't return.
