Does anyone on the list have a DVD burner ? I'v got one (Ricoh 5125A-DP,) and it works fine (if a bit arcane and slow...)
Any probs setting it up?
No probs at all (on a raw 8.1pro installation) - plugged up and off it went as a CD/DVD-ROM and CD/RW, installed dvr+rw-tools (can't remember where they came from, but I'll look out the ref...) and followed the instructions. Basically: "Format" the disc, then write a pre-prepared iso to it just like with cdrecord from the console (well, actually, a bit simpler than that!) 3.5G took about 30 mins to write. I haven't played with video stuff yet (but all the necessary software is out there) so can't report on that, except to say that very few commercial DVD videos are less that 4.7G, and since the media is single layer...
Any pricing guidelines?
All the ones I looked at were in the £200 range, but this was the only one available here (SE London) which seemed to meet the necessary specs (The 5120 series are not supported, apparently, but the 5125 is...) I haven't found anywhere that sells DVD+R media, only DVD+RW, and it's comparable to CD/RW on a capacity basis. I have heard that some media/drive combinations fall over, like in the early days of CD/R(W) but the Philips media I got is no problem. Lastly, there are 3 standards - DVD-RAM is a data-only, cartridge based system intended for backups etc; DVD-RW is slightly older and has no garunteed compatibility with DVD players and DVD-ROM drives; DVD+RW claims almost full compatibility with DVD players etc...
