Can anyone provide me with a boot disk so that I can install SuSE Linux 8.0 Professional on a Dell PowerEdge 2600?
I have searched around, but can't find any pre-made ones. I have tried to make my own using the newer MegaRAID source code, but the build of the newer modules fail (and thats before I make my own driver disk and get into the 1000's of kernel versioning problems I know I will have....)
The only solution I have been provided with (by three different people!) is :
Yes - we installed Red Hat V8 and all runs fine straight from the box!
Big deal - since it came out long after our 8.0, of course RH 8.0 supports that particular hardware.
Oh yeah I know, I am arguing *for* SuSE, but if all I am getting is a load of people saying "You can't get SuSE 8.0 onto a Dell 2600 use RedHat 8.0" then perhaps it would be usefull for SuSE to address this problem a little clearer than they are doing.
So for SuSE - use SL 8.1 or SLES8
I am in contact with a person who is having the same problems with SLES8, so I know that won't work. I have already ordered 8.1, and I am waiting for it - but I would still prefer to have 8.0 on it so it fits our corporate standard. When you have 40 or 50 servers it makes training, maintence and support easier if you know they are all exactly the same.
- go to http://www.domsch.com/linux/ and have a look
Been there, SuSE specific information is pretty low.
- read the SuSE SDB, we got an update. We worked with the guy (Dell engineer) who owns the above URL actually, so what he's got there is from us.
Well I would advise you to email him some more updates, its very low on SuSE specific information. It would be great if you helped me get the driver disk working! I can post it on our web site. Here are the steps I have taken : 1 - Downloaded the source code for megaraid 1.18f. 2 - Copied megaraid.c and megaraid.h to /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi on another machine with SuSE 8.0 installed. 3 - make cloneconfig, make, make modules 4 - formatted a floppy with ext2 and mounted it 3 - made linux/suse/i386-8.0/install and linux/suse/i386-8.0/modules on the floppy 4 - made an archive update.tar.gz and update.tgz with lib/modules/2.4.18-4GB/scsi/megaraid.o using the new module. 5 - copied the module to floppy under linux/suse/i386-8.0/modules 6 - unmounted the floppy 7 - booted the Dell 2600 off of the 8.0 CD 1 and held down alt to load the floppy It doesn't work, it doesn't seem to load the driver still. If I drop back to linuxrc (or yast1) and try to manually load the module, it fails loading the megaraid module from the scsi/raid if I I choose the one on the list, and if I choose other modules, it acesses the floppy, but doesn't find a module.
