Is this kernel package an update for a later version of suse?
I guess you only can do what the error message suggests.. Did you look at linux/Documentation/Changes? It will list the version of modutils you need , and how to check which version you currently have.
If you have the required version level, then maybe something got corrupted in your filesystem. Try reinstalling the kernel package, and reinstall the required version of modutils.
Yes, this is Suse 7.3. I am using the originally install kernel, not an update kernel. That is why the error puzzles me. And, no, I have not actually looked at the referenced documentation.
