If cost if your biggest limitation, then it comes down to how many disks you need and what RAID level you want. Personally, 3Ware is probably your best bet in terms of overall perfomnce and supprt of different RAID levels.
I also have a good experience with 3ware. I use one 7500-4 for RAID 1 (2 x 120 GB Wester Digital HD, /home only) and I have order another one for RAID 5 (3 x 120 GB WD HD, /home only). 3ware provides Linux drivers for older versions of SuSE and recommends the driver which is a part of SuSE Linux for 8.1. I haven't had a disk crash in the RAID yet so I cannot say how it works. Has anybody had a disk crash in the 3ware RAID? -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se
