Hi, I've recently purchased some servers that have the 3ware 7500-8 RAID controller installed (2 x ATA drives in mirroring mode) and I am having some problems installing SuSE 8.1 professional on them. The insall goes completely fine until the point when you are asked to boot the installed system for the first time. At this, point I get the following messages to the console during bootup process:- Loading module 3w-xxxx ... Using /lib/modules/2.4.19-64GB-SMP/kernel/drivers/scsi/3w-xxxx.o scsi0 : 3ware Storage Controller at 0xe400, IRQ: 17, P-chip: 1.3 scsi0 : 3ware Storage Controller 3w-xxxx: scsi0: Unit #0: Command (0xc3231200) timed out resetting card. 3w-xxxx: scsi0: Unit #0: Command (0xc3231200) timed out resetting card. 3w-xxxx: scsi0: Reset succeeded. 3w-xxxx: scsi0: Unit #0: Command (0xc3231200) timed out resetting card. scsi: device set offline - not ready or command retry failed after host reset: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0 Loading module reiserfs ... Using /lib/modules/2.4.19-64GB-SMP/kernel/fs/reiserfs/reiserfs.o kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-8, errno = 2 VFS: Cannot open root device "807" or 08:07 Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:07 Obviously at this point it all stops. The strange thing is that if I boot from the DVD and then go into INSTALL, and then Boot Installed System then the system boots up totally fine from the RAID controller. Therefore it appears that there is some kind of configuration parameter that is not getting passed to the installed boot-loader that is getting auto-detected during the DVD boot-process. I have tried replacing the default GRUB install with LILO to get around problems that have been found between GRUB and RAID as described in this article:- http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/fhassel_grub_lilo.html But the system still fails at exactly the same point. Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to proceed? many thanks Alex
