Run apt-get update from the command line to set up. IMO, you really do not want the prpm's p=patch. Full rpms are better/safer.
I had no directory in var/lib called /apt. Thats the reason.
I don't either, and mine has been working successfully for months.
I uninstalled apt4rpm and synaptic, and reinstalled again.
These are the package names. Did you install apt4rpm or apt-get? apt-0.5.4cnc8-1cl.i386.rpm apt-devel-0.5.4cnc8-1cl.i386.rpm synaptic-0.24-rb1.i386.rpm
Still I have problems with the Gnome culprit :-(
In my /etc/apt/sources.list, I have no "gnome", only "gnome2".

Hi.
On my SuSE 8.1 system, I have installed synaptic. It gives the following error:
could not open RPM package list file /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.gwdg.de_pub_linux_suse_apt_SuSE_8.1-i386_base_pkgl ist.update-prpm:
Problem opening /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.gwdg.de_pub_linux_suse_apt_SuSE_8.1-i386_base_pkgl ist.update-prpm
The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
Why can't it open the package list ?.
