1) the log file name is subtly different -- you know you have a logrotate rule for "rotating the web log", but if the logfile name (or location) changed, you're no longer writing to the file that you are rotating
interesting thoughts! this i know for a fact is not the case. i was well aware of the fact that i *need* the logs, so i made absolutely sure that the new version writes to the same file. meaning: i am writing to the file i am rotating. will double check tomorrow (@home now) but i did check that several times already...
2) the new version doesn't "let go" of the file to allow a rotation to occur. You may need some pre/post rotate rules to temporarilly suspend web logging while the rotate occurs. [in other words, logrotate is trying to do what you ask, but because the file is still "open" by the apache process, the rename/rebuild operations are simply "pending"] This i find particulary intresting. Maybe the apache behaviour changed, or compiling my own apache had other side effects... the i would have write a little script to turn of apache just before the logrotate.
Will try this as well, and let you know the results. I have really
checked everything i could possibly think of, but this sounds like a
possible cause to me!
Anyway, will try and double check, and post the results. Dunno it it
will be tomorrow though, buzy schedule, otherwise next week.
Thanks A LOT!
Kindly yours,
