In trying to resolve this problem I contacted the samba folks and they
suggest that I upgrade my kernel.
But when running YOU under yast2 no upgrade shows as a choice even though
going through the ftp server under package images an update is listed.
Under the old yast1 pre-8.x I could select kernel updates. Do I need to
manually download the kernel and sources in order to perform the update to
the kernel? Or do I need to compile my own kernel?

I have the following setup:
Compaq Proliant 6000 w/ 4 pentium PRO cpu's, 512 MB ram SuSE PRO 8.0 kernel package k_psmp-2.4.18-56 samba 2.2.5 w/winbind using ACL's (acl-2.0.11-2)
Using samba to provide access to a share using MS NT server for authentication via winbind. All works well until the following occurs:
I am getting the following errors showing in my messages file ( and also using dmesg):
<1>Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000002d
You have a bad kernel. You need to fix this before looking at any other Samba issues. Jeremy.
