I am trying to connect my linuxbox (SuSE 7.1 Kernel 2.4) with Bellsouth DSL ISP. After several attempt with Roaring Penguin rp-pppoe-3.5-1.src.rpm without much success, I am about to give up on it.
Is there anyway I can setup BS DSL with my SuSE without using Roaring Penguin? For some reasons, SuSE support site does not list adequate info to setup DSL.
Any advice is appreciated,
Shinichi, I have BellSouth DSL Service as well, and you'd better not tell them your running Linux or they'll do you like they tried, or are trying, to do me. On the Other hand, your DSL setup would best depend on what kind of Modem your trying to use. If its that crappy 3Com internal PCI modem or the older USB only DSL modem, its pretty much sorry about your luck. If its their newer dual external modem, (dual meaning ethernet & USB) your in luck. It may take another investment in hardware but you can pick one up really cheaply at Wally world (Wal-Mart). That is a LinkSys Cable/DSL modem router (or similar device). Here's the setup: 1. Setup your DSL Modem to do the authentication to Bellsouth, and plug your Machine directly into it via Ethernet. option 2. Setup your DSL Modem to NOT do DHCP, turn on NATing, then give the internal (non-WAN) interface a new IP Address. Then buy the LinkSys router, and let it do the authentication, and turn on NATting at the LinkSys. This makes for a good Firewall BTW. Make sure either way that your Authentication (If on the LinkSys) is PPPoE. (This is the only option for my LinkSys & DSL users.) Make sure the DSL Modem is setup for PPP over ATM vcc1 for authentication. If your DSL modem is recognized by SuSE as a DSL modem you should be able to setup PPPoA. If it is connected up via an Ethernet Port you'll do the PPPoE stuff, with the modem doing the conversion. The reason I like the External DSL Modem & LinkSys setup is the dual NAT. My DSL Modem/Router NATs, then the LinkSYS NATs on top of that. I have found that 99% of scans on my personal firewall went away when I went to this setup! And I also believe the newer LinkSys Routers have a firewall built in. The reason I say not to use SuSE for the authentication is BellSouth, and their paranoia over your "complex setup" in that you use Linux. I had them try to refuse to support my DSL link at all because of it. But when I could prove that all authentication and connection maintenance was done by the two hardware solutions that are OKed on BellSouth's website they had no choice. My last bit of advice would be to upgrade to SuSE 8.0, I have found it to be one great OS, after you patch it fully of course. And, it probably has better docs on the DSL setup. -- See Ya' Howard Coles Jr. John 3:16!
