Well Amazon.com finally saw fit to super-saver-ship my 8.1 box to me tonight, and I just finished the install and basic config. Three words: perfect, perfect and....let's see...oh yeah, perfect! The only minor glitch during installation was that for the first time in three versions, my Samtron 77V monitor wasn't detected, and there's no entry for it in the list of models, but the closest-match seems to be working OK so I won't take any points off. A big, huge thank you to the SuSE folks: I never thought I'd see the day that my Intel 82810 graphics card would be pre-configured for 3D accelleration right out of the box with absolutely no tweeking needed. Finally I get to play Tuxracer, tuxkart etc etc. Thanks again SuSE. Of course the look and feel is a huge improvement. The buzz is right, with SuSE especially, linux is finally ready to take on the other OSes point by point and win. BTW all the little bugs and annoyances from 8.0 have been fixed. Modem config went without a hitch; there's even an option box now for stupid mode, so no more editing of config files needed. All in all I can say this is the best version and best linux distro yet, (yes I did try out RH 8.0 just to experiment a little, but after spending $40 on it I gave the disks away a few days later...) Anyway great job everyone and please keep up the good work you're all doing. Now I'll shut up and go surf the web and play Flightgear for a while... :-) -- Bryce Hardy (Santa Rosa, CA) brycehdy@sonic.net
