Hello list
I have just tried suse 8 & i must say it was one of the best destros i have ever seen very nice but there was one problem that SuSE dont give ISO file of its cd only live eval , one of the option for me was to order cds which i coulnt do as i live in a far poor country & the price of the cds were equlant to 1 month salary of mine :( so then i download the whole directory tree of suse 8 "approx 5 gb" but i must say it was worth it . now i want to parmote suse within my freinds but i dont have the cds so that i can give demo ... i was thinking is there any way i can make CDs from the suse 8.0 directory tree that i have ? is it possible ?
thanks Faisal
When I read this, I felt sick about the number of old computers which people just throw away in the States.
We should come up with a way to fund the distribution of SuSE Linux in places such as where you live.
Are you aware that you can install directly from the net? I believe this is still possible.
If your friends can access you system over a network, they should be able to install off of your image of the SuSE tree. I believe SuSE deserve to be paid for their hard work, OTOH, I believe people who can't afford to pay for the CDs should still be able to use the product. If they can gain access to products such as SuSE Linux, they will have a better economy, and will then be able to pay for the CDs.
I do believe you could create CDs from the image on the net. There are a few tricks to doing such things. I don't like to talk a lot about doing this because there are too many people who believe that free software means software that doesn't cost anythig. If you need any help, shoot me some e-mail off-list. I've never done what you are talking about, but I have done some similar things.

When I read this, I ask myself about speed and cost of an Internet connection in the country of Mr.Faisal. The poor countries obviously are poor in different ways. E.g, here where I live, people must pay only about 2/3 of their average salary for a SuSE box. On the other hand, if they want to download 5Gb, through an average dialup Internet connection (which is about maximum they can afford) it would take about 250 hours at 56k speed. And this is just theory, since the real data flow is much less than 56k. More realistic estimation would be 350 - 400 hours. Now, this is much more expensive than a box of SuSE, and takes MUCH more than 1 average salary (more than 10 av. salaries). Hence, no luck - we buy boxes. I hope this was not too much off topic. Best regards rms
