Thanks neil. I tried installing it using the 'Linear' option this morning (via the text menu as explained in http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/fhassel_check_mbr.html ) and got "L 01 01 01 01 ..." When I tried the rescue option, I did not find a /etc/lilo.conf on the system. I'm giving up on 8.0 and going back to 7.2. At least it worked ;-) If anybody out there has a solution to this please don't keep it to yourself. Back to 7.2 I go. Deart Clifford: I had a similar problem with 7.3 which I posted but got no suggestions. LILO was written to a floppy as the boot method but always came up with 01 01 01 etc. I can get around this by booting with the install floppy and typing manual in response to the boot: response. This works but I have no idea why LILO no longer works. I have done several installs on the same machine earlier which did work but this is no longer true. If someone does enlighten you could you also let me know? Thanks, Neil At 11:45 AM 9/2/2002 +0100, you wrote:

I'm guessing this is a lilo issue but 7.2 was installed on this machine
with no problems. After several tries with 8.0, changing where lilo was
installed (i tried both MBR and the /boot partition), making sure '/boot' was in the first 12?? cyliders (it's the first 20Meg), i went back to good ole 7.2 and it worked first time.
Now if anybody has had this problem how did they resolve it. I'm not too happy doing an update to 8.0. I prefer doing a total rebuild ;-)
