Hi, linux.local won't work because it doesn't have a valid DNS entry. For instance my machine is called kittyhawk and is in my geekworx.co.za domain; it is assigned an IP Address of 10.0.0.115. I can connect locally on my machine to http//kittyhawk/ or http://kittyhawk.geekworx.co.za/ because the local machine knows about itself and knows what its hostname and domainname settings are. However, if I don't add a DNS entry to a local DNS server, I will have to use the IP Address http://10.0.0.115/ to connect to my machine from a different one. There are two ways of fixing this problem: 1). Add a DNS entry to a loal DNS server... ...not practical because you probably don't have one abd because your IP Address keeps changing. 2). Edit '/etc/hosts/' (same as hosts and lmhosts on Windows)... ...also not practical because your IP Address keeps changing. Basically you are stuck, due to the IP Address that keeps changing, it is going to be very difficult for you to connect unless you keep using http://mrichard.dyndns.org/webmail/, thats because this organisation do the name to address translation for you (i.e. They translate your hostname to the current IP Address for you). I hope this answers your question because I may have understood you incorrectly. Regards Q On Mon, 2002-09-02 at 23:20, Martin Richard wrote:
Hi!
I have a probably simple question with apache but I didn't find my answer. My internet connection is DSL so when I reboot, my IP will change. I subscribed to dyndns.org. This way, someone can access my web page using mrichard.dyndns.org. Also, I installed a webmail service and I'm suppose to access it from anywhere with the following address: http://mrichard.dyndns.org/webmail. I put an alias in httpd.conf like Alias /webmail /usr/local/IlohaMail/source But when I go on http://mrichard.dyndns.org/webmail on the computer where it is the webmail, it works but if I am elsewhere, it try to access linux.local/webmail on the machine where I am I think. It doesn't work. How can I solve this problem?
Thanks
