I'm attempting to get my internal wireless card in my IBM Thinkpad R30 working correctly. The card was dectected by YaST and comes up as "Harris Semiconductor". YaST configures the card as eth1.
If, however, I try to "ifconfig eth1 up", I get the following error message:
eth1: unknown interface: No such device
Admittidely, I'm a newbie but I've been poking around for a few days now on the Net trying to figure it out. Here's the ls output of /etc/sysconfig/network:
. config ifcfg-eth0 ifcfg-lo providers wireless .. dhcp ifcfg-eth1 ifcfg.template scripts
And here is the contents of ifcfg-eth1:
BOOTPROTO="dhcp" STARTMODE="onboot" UNIQUE="lgGW.CA1y3f8FAiF"
Right now, I'm not even worried about finding my wireless network... it seems like the system isn't even recognizing my card. Can anyone help me? If you need more information, just let me know. I'm trying to make the switch from Windows, but I've got to have wireless to do so.
Thanks, Branton Boehm

First update your system. There is an update for the pcmcia stuff. Check out the unofficial susefaq: http://susefaq.sourceforge.net/ethernetproblems.html
Change the setting in /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia from kernel to external. Check /etc/pcmcia/network.opts and see if it is set to yes: USE_SUSE_NETWORK_SETUP=yes If you update you should be able to use yast2 to set up your card. Make sure you set the card to pcmcia in yast2. Hope this helps. Keith Winston has helped alot of people with wireless problems, so you can probably search the archives and find an answer :) -- _ _ __ _____ _____ ___| |_ | '__| / __\ \ /\ / / _ \/ _ \ __| -o) | | _ \__ \\ V V / __/ __/ |_ /\\ |_|(_) |___/ \_/\_/ \___|\___|\__|_\_v rsweet@garagenetworks.net "unix soit qui mal y pense."
