I'm considering getting one of these beasts and am unsure of their potential. What I really want to know is... Is it possible to drag and drop files using konqueror (or others) directly onto the cd for copying from harddisk or do you need to use specific progs for this functionality?

Drag drop won't do it. A CDROM needs all files to be burnt to it in a single session, or batches of files in a multisession disk (software option). There are quite a few software packages available in Linux to put files on CDROMs. My personal preference is XCDRoast... mostly because it has been very reliable, and I don't need to do any fiddling to make it work. It just worked out of the box with SuSE7.3 and 8.0. By the way, it's not a dumb question if you have never used a CD-RW before.
