I have one computer, my wife's, upstairs, and my computer is downstairs. both computers have sound cards with micrphone inputs. I know this is possible with Windows, but both machines are Suse 8.0 Linux. Is this possible and if so, how would one go about it?

You might want to try GnomeMeeting, which works pretty well. The version included with SuSE 8 is pretty old, though, so you might want to install a more recent version. The old version should work just fine for what you
want, however.
