Hello fellow Susers,
As a former red hat user I give Suse fairly good marks..however there is one little peculiarity that haunts me and, pardon me for saying so, the suse database more often than not leaves me wanting more information. Anyway, I have some problems sorting out the configuration files in SuSe. An example, if you install postfix you have postfix config files in /etc/postfix, but there is also a config file in /etc/sysconfig namely the file "postfix", but wait theres more good people, a further search shows me a postfix related config file in /etc/rc.d called "postfix".
/etc/rc.d/postfix is the service level script it basicly tells at which run levels postfix will be started /etc/sysconfig/postfix is the configuration for postfix normaly SuSEconfig --module postfix will parse this file and create a valid /etc/postfix/master.cf /etc/sysconfig/mail is generic instruction that are used by sendmail and postfix (actually again SuSEconfig --module postfix (module sendmail) will use /etc/sysconfig/mail to generate a valid configuration file -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx
