Grip does use CDDB for getting the track listings (and other information). Music CDs have only recently had track names embedded in them (CDTEXT) and CDROM drive may not be able to read it. I'm pretty sure Grip doesn't even attempt to read CDTEXT anyway. As for how the CDDB stuff works, it performs a calculation based on the CD's TOC to produce a single value key. This is submitted to CDDB and if a match is found, CDDB returns the track info. This can either be done using CDDB's own protocol, or over HTTP. These days people mostly use the free FreeDB rather than CDDB. Jamie On Tue, 23 Jul 2002, Brian Marr wrote:
Suse 8.0 I am wondering how CDDB works. When ripping does grip have to go to the free cddb database to get track information ? Any info on how this process works would be helpful. I am puzzled as to why track information is not on the cdrom.
Background. Grip has worked well in ripping a couple of CDs to Ogg Vorbis format - but only when I am on the net.
