In the installation you have two possibilities: - use an already existing/mounted windows partition on your drive - or create/fake your own windows registration.
I chose the second as I'm on an entirely Linux notebook
After you installed it simply run "wine /windows/c/programm/notepad.exe" or whatever explication (with the excact path to its exe file) you want to run.
The wine homepage faq suggests that I do wine /usr/windows/sol.exe (using a UNIX filename) So I downloaded NoteTab Pro, unzipped it and then did wine /home/nick/.wine/fake_windows/Program\ Files/Accessories/np/Setup.exe This worked! I got a setupo menu, and it setup the program. Tee-riffic. Then I did wine /home/nick/.wine/fake_windows/Program\ Files/NoteTab\ Pro\ Trial/NotePro.exe And I'm back where I started. Five or six little wine-glass-shaped-cursor flashes and then nada.
