Has anyone had any success getting Linux to control/route a satellite modem?
I am trying to help my brother setup a small business network using SuSE8. They have a Hughes Network Systems Directway DW4000 satellite broadband internet connection (ouch, that is mouthfull). The send/receive modems connect into the PC via a "convenient" USB cable instead of your bog standard RJ45 network cable. The software and support that comes with the system is Microsoft only.

The idea is to have a pared down Linux system to provide routing/masquerading and firewalling for the business network. (I have done this with a standard cable modem, and it worked quite nicely) The problem is that we have yet to get the USB satellite modem device to work with Linux. The device itself works, and if we connect a wonderously expensive Win2000 server and the driver sw for the modems it all works nicely, sans proper firewall security. Thing is, they don't want the expense and problems of a Win2k server... they want a Linux system. ;-)
I have done a fair bit of Google-ing and not come up with a lot... Anyone have any ideas, web site suggestions, or experience with these USB satellite modems from Hughes?

Basically, forget it. Until recently, I used a Direcway satellite setup and there is absolutely no way to use those modems with Linux. There are several threads on this issue in the DSL Reports satellite forum (just go to www.dslreports.com, select forums, then Satellite and do a search on Linux). There is a company that sells a system for Linux use but it is based on kernel 2.2 (RedHat 6.2 based I believe). You'll find information about them in the satellite forum as well. When I was using DPC, I set up a minimal Win2K box to use ICS with. ICS works okay with Linux but the pain of course is having to setup a Windows box to use it. Check Direcway's web site www.direcway.com. They are soon to be beta testing a hardware router for the 2-way (SRS) satellite system. I've not kept up with any of this since I got cable modem in May, but it may be worth keeping an eye on. There are also threads regarding this in the DSL Reports satellite forum. Don
