It seems to have set up 3 devices: cdrecorder, cdrom and dvd. Now that I think about it, that's not true. It set up two devices (hdc and hdd). It set up 3 mount points, not 3 devices.... I had assumed that the CDRW would be used as a recorder and a cdrom drive, and the dvd device could be used as either a dvd or cdrom. The CDRW is set up as the master on the secondary IDE, and the dvd is the slave on the secondary IDE. Does this make sense now? Well, I checked my links last night, and here they are:
cdrecorder -> /dev/sr1 cdrom -> /dev/sr0 dvd -> /dev/hdd
I did not set the dvd link, it was already there.
Yast2 still wants to install from the DVD. Even though this works fine, it's frustrating because when I first installed 8.0 on this new machine I wanted to use the DVD, but it would not boot from the DVD.
Not sure what to try next....

Ok, Mike, I think I have the problem figured out for you. The OS set up two drives, correct? A DVD & CDRW? Ok, what it does with a DVD drive since in reality it is both a dvd and cdrom, it sees two drives in your system. Now according to your /dev readout, and this part confuses me a little, is that the cdrom is sr0 or hdc (master on the second IDE channel)? Is that the way you have it set up in your machine and the cdrw is hdd or the second device on that same channel? The reason it uses the cdrom, but not the dvd is the links. It will boot from the cdrom ok, right? Which is the dvd drive as well. If my thoughts and calculations are correct, then you need to fix the link to the dvd in your /devs. As root, remove the dvd link and create a new one. I think you would do this for the correct link. ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd (this makes a soft link to the same device as the cdrom) Check your devices though to be sure you have them showing up correctly. As I mentioned, it seems to be showing that the DVD/CDROM is the second device (hdd) and it needs to be hdc or the first device (master) on that second IDE channel to boot from it. All of the links may be incorrect if it is indeed the hdd drive, but I would make sure of their settings and then only change the /dev/dvd. Hope that doesn't confuse you too much, as I know part of what I wrote was me thinking out loud. ;o) Patrick --- KMail v1.4.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.0 --- Amiga, SuSE Linux, PC Sales & Service Magic Page Products
