But the scanner install doesn't survive a reboot - in fact it doesn't even seem to survive a logout. Returning to Yast2, it seems to have had a memory blank and things are only got going again by re-installing the device.
I have an epson 1650 scanner and had the same problem at the beginning. The solution for me was to write /sbin/modprobe scanner in /etc/init.d.boot.local So that the usb module for the scanner should be loaded at every boot.
