I'm currently working through these issues myself, with some success.
Check and make sure so6 installed to your home directory. Run /opt/staroffice6.0/program/setup and repair as necessary.
This was installed at that place, so I didn't change this one.
In tools>options>staroffice>paths, make sure the paths point to /home, not /opt.
I changed a few entries from /opt to /home/frits and deeper, and now I can open doc and xls without any problems! I am very happy. I think SuSE needs to change the locations in the installation of the package.
This has allowed me to open .doc files and save .sdc files as .sxc. .sxc is apparently a zipped format, takes forever to load and save. I may revert to .sdc.
When I made some changes to a .sdc file, Star Office 6.0 warned that not all formatting can be saved in that format, and it suggested the .sxc Now it also saves in this formats, it didn't take too long, about 2 seconds. The same spreadsheet in .sdc is 104.5kB, the .xls version is 71.5kB, and the .sxc version is 24.5kB. So it is indeed very compact Thank you very much Jim for helping me out! -- Frits J.
