Thanks Jim,
My brutal but effective way was to uninstall and reinstall SO6 in a network
rather than a standalone workstation configuration.
The bugs seem to have disappeared -- it's now for instance possible to
install new printer drivers.

| I'm currently working through these issues myself, with some success.

| Check and make sure so6 installed to your home directory. Run
| /opt/staroffice6.0/program/setup and repair as necessary.

| In tools>options>staroffice>paths, make sure the paths point to /home, not
| /opt.

| This has allowed me to open .doc files and save .sdc files as .sxc. .sxc
| is apparently a zipped format, takes forever to load and save. I may |
| revert to .sdc.
