Removed the printer entry in YaST, unsuccessfully tried the .ppd provided by
Adobe, reinstalled the printer using the HP-SourceForge .ppd, set SO6's
"Generic Printer" command to "lpr" -- and, lo and behold, it works!
That said, the pen width involved in the rendering of _some_ truetypes looks
improbably broad, as compared with OpenOffice using the same driver.
Hmmm....

| This _does_ work, but with the result that truetypes such as Adabi MT
| Condensed Light are now rendered appallingly -- by contrast, the printed
| output of OpenOffice 1.0 (in conjunction with the HP-SourceForge lj1200
| .ppd) at least reliably matches the output of OpenOffice in Windows.
|
| As and when SuSE release CUPS drivers for REt-reliant LaserJets that
| actually work, I might even get some decent truetype printed output from
| StarOffice 6.0.
|
| But perhaps not this side of a definitive solution in the Middle East.

|
| In despair,
