Hi.
CUPS is the only one that made selection of paper tray, size and such possible for me. lprng has som Z switch to do these things but it was far from intuitive and I could never get it working properly. As for Berkeley lpr I don't think those things are possible at all. Correct me if I'm wrong. /Anders
CUPS is one of the few really nice products to recently come out of what I can describe as my community. That is the US DoD IT community. (It was actually developed about a mile away from where I live.) It is available for many OSs, and is (realtively) easy to install and configure. Some of its 'secure by default' features are anoying, but they make sense in context. It seems the project has a good deal of buy-in from printer vendors. That is what matters more than just about anything else. It works magic on my LAN at work. Works fine here at home as well with my HP 970Cse. Supports duplexing, print quality, color/gray scale, etc., very nicely. It has a nice web interface for remote management, and supports several different network printing protocols. As Ben Rosenberg will attest to, it had some 'issues' early on. I don't face those anymore. It does require a certain paradigm shift if you're used to lprng and the like. Steven
